Visions and Tales - Legion

Visions and Tales - Legion

- By Valthalin -

I found myself standing on a patch of white glistening stone. Around me stars and planets swirled so close I felt I could reach out and touch them.

I was confined within a great hall. Though there were no visible walls. They were lined with pillars of the same white stone. The supports soared high above fading into the heavens as if to hold the void at bay for me.

The lengths of the hall stretched into a clouded twilight in either direction.

How had a got here? I can't remember what I was doing a moment ago.

I had the faintest feeling I was looking for something, or someone? Or maybe the other way round?

I took a step forward and had the feeling I would find what I was looking for if I kept walking.

As I walked a doorway waved into existence like a mirage in the desert heat.

Am I dreaming? I felt compelled to step through.

Leaving the star filled hall I entered a small room.

There were no swirling stars in this room only the white floor immediately around me and the blackness beyond. Still I felt a slight sense of vertigo as I looked about. The space seemed to be almost imperceptible expanding.

As I walked further into the room a small tree sprouted from the floor a sapling little more than 5 meters tall. As I neared the tree I could see it was made of the same glistening white stone as the floor.

Unlike the floor it appeared to be alive. Even from a distance I could tell it was pulsating, breathing? tiny streaks of golden fire occasionally racing beneath and across it's surface.

I was shocked to realize I was no longer looking at the tree but a tall backed chair of simple grey stone maybe 20 paces from the base of the tree. Had it always been there? When had I noticed?

Staring at the chair I felt calm. The room's space suddenly felt close and cozy like a warm blanket. Memories greeted me like a summer breeze glimpses of a happy childhood played out in my mind.

A lovely sunny day in my teens, I was in the fields playing with my fathers guard dog Minion, he was getting up there in the years. But in his mind he was still a pup. Even though it was clearly an effort for him to run or hear. A good dog I thought with a smile.

Lost in the sensation of familiarity, a wrongness nipped at the edges of my mind. What was a dog?

A cold prickly sensation slowly snaked its way down my neck and coiled into my chest constricting my heart. I choked as I reeled back to now, it was Doom.

Suddenly two writhing shadows clawed their way out the tree truck. Hectically rolling to taking position on each side of the stone chair.

The shadows flowed like blood on cobble stone settling into placid bodies of impossible darkness.

An irrational fear of falling physically tugged at me. Threatening to send my toppling into an endless suffocating void.

Just like that the moment of stillness passed. The air just above the pools began dancing in a heat haze. The pools bubbled and countless ghostly hands sprang forth from each clawing upward into the air. Coalescing into a jagged doorway just as quickly as they had erupted.

I'm dreaming. Razor sharp talons of anticipation ripped across my numbed senses. Like a demon cackling in joy to the beat of my racing heart.

Somewhere within me I heard a whisper "Coming." A feeling of euphoria and terror consumed me. The overwhelming urge to vomit filled my throat muscles as I drown. Even that, I couldn't tear my eyes away from the black.

A mass of clouds rolled out from the portal. I felt more than saw within the broiling clouds. A tall massive figure. It's burning gaze was crushing. Like stars crashing in from the void. I dropped to my knees. My throat closed up. I was scarcely aware of a warm stream cascading down legs. Dumbstruck and slack jawed I slumped there.

An explosion rocked me. Magnificent arcs of vibrant color burst out from an orb just above the stone chair. Blinding light flowed out in brilliant torrents. Through it I could see without sight. A being suspended above the throne.

It was.

Awe filled me. The being looked upwards and the sky filled with visions of worlds, beings and creatures of all manner and nature. A Billion lifetimes on a Billion different worlds flickered across the sky.

As the scene played out I watched as my eyes burned and my flesh blazed and turned to ash.

One of the beings of abyssal black flowed toward me with it's garments swirling in the windless chamber.

It raised a finger to my broken body. A wispy haze of black smoke rose from my left breast.

Then it spoke without words in countless languages, voices, and tones "Legion you are found."

I threw off my covers SCREAMING.

Sweat streaming down my body. My heart racing. I frantically searched my room for a threat. But there was nothing. I waited in the dark and silence. Nothing.

My bed was soaked.

My holo aid glowed in the darkness slightly illuminating my bunk. I could hear my heart beat in my ears slowing. My panic subsided. The heart rate warning glyph in the upper left of my sight dimming.

I rubbed my throat, I'm parched. I cautiously got out of bed and headed toward the bathroom. I pulled the water cup from it's magnetic perch with a practice motion and filled it. The cool water soothing me as it went down. I placed the cup back and put my hands on the sink's edge.

With a deep breath I looked into the mirror. The night light on the wall dimly washing my body in a teal light As I stared at the mirror a flicker caught my eye.

Raw panic gripped me once again. NO!?
