Walkabout Architectural Sketchy

Saw a cool building whilest out walking. The late afternoon sunlight was casting on the pumice red paint of the building. The shady L-shaped entrance dancing between a cool and hot red as the moving shapes of leaves blew in a soft breeze. So! Naturally I stood on the sidewalk like a creeper and did a quick sketch of it.

This is in my mini sketchbook of course.

Tired Sketches Upgraded to Sleepy Sketches

Sleepy sketches of ladies. First sketch is of a dude's comp on Deviantart. When I look at his work, I want to paint like him =d

Second is a model from the magical random good creeper sight.

looked at my scan for a second and altered the sketch.

Tired Doodle

Was feeling tired and didn't really want to do anything, so I just picked up the pencile and kind of absent mindedly started sketching faces while watching game reviews. Older drawing on the left

Also I was testing how to get high resolution scans out of my scanner yesterday and fiddled with it's settings. So this are very high rez in comparison to my past scans. It feels around as sharp and the values feel around as varied as it look on paper, so I'm happier with these.

Sketch Dailies Hit Girl

Didn't come out the way I wanted but that's why I practice right? *sigh* even though I would like gold every time.

Sketch dailies submission for hit girl.

Zone-tan vs Juri Han thumbnail sketch

So I was watching a street fighter short movie on juri yesterday and wanted to do a fan art of her. So I popped open P.S. and started planning out how I wanted to do this. I decided on a paneled art piece setup chronically a fight between juri and someone. Then I starting thinking to myself who should she fight?  Ryu was the first person that came to mind. So I started the sketch with him in mind. But while looking through my image library I saw zone-tan... And it started to evolve from there.

Here is the first panel thumbnail of the match up.

Walk about mini thumbnails

I saw an artist portfolio/interview of an artist I kinda look up to, and she was talking about having a little pocket sketchbook to capture daily life. So got me a mini sketchbook and did some really fast thumbnail sketches of some objects and people walking by during lunch.

Line Weight

Giving my brain a break from measuring, looking at faces, and stuff. Little interim drawing out of my head. Wanted to focus on line weight and feeling out form volumes and movement/flow whatever. =P

Female Face Proportions

Practicing some faces, forcing myself to study distance and relationships.

Left most is the original, two right ones are Photoshop cut-ups to try and feel out something closer to the model. My paper drawing felt alright but when I took a few minutes away and looked back at it the face felt off. So I shortened the chin. It felt much better after that, but something was still off, so i toyed around with making the nose and eyes a little larger.

Project Kefka - Sabien Exploration

So my friends and I started working on a 2D fighting game in unity last month. We are trying to come up with and finalize ideas on characters. Currently we have four characters in the works to of which are more are less done esthetically

This was an expansion on the thumbnail below. This fighter is a magic user with a "great sword". For this round I am straight interpreting a great sword as a literal sword. So I was toying around with what the sword might look like. I'm not really digging any of the swords at the moment.

This was the first thumb of one of the fighters I did. I liked the large ornamental headpiece.

These are some exploration sketches to look for a new body. Of the sketches below I liked number one, eight, and thirteen the most. The more I feel out the fighter the more I lean towards a top heavy character with some kind of shroud wrapping around the shoulders like eight.

If you would like to see the other fighters for this project you can find them at my friends portfolio blog. >> here <<

Chibi Guardian Angel

I started a project the day before last to create Chibi conversions of females I consider to be heroes from games and movies, with some relatively small design alterations. The character below is based on a character that isn't really a hero but she has saved my life more than once. She is the Guardian of the Gateless!
It's been a while since I modeled. So while I was thumbnailing I thought why not model these as well? I'm not totally happy with with the model yet. The hands, legs, and feet in particular. I think I might change those bits to be more like bubbly not sure.
I've been toying with a few different color schemes but I still do not know what I'm going to do. I would like an analogous purple, or perhaps gold black and white?

Triumph of Ferocity Redesign August 11

At the Wizards of the Coast grand prix in Portland the other day and was having a chat with a lady about the portrayal of Liliana and Garruk. She thought the design of the storytelling was lazy. So I got to thinking, how else could that cards name be interpreted? Here are my first couple of ideas on the phrase.

Working sketches for a redesign of the magic the gathering card "Triumph of Ferocity"

Painted bust

Finished my homework for the week, mostly haha. Anyway getting back to painting after a little over a week. So here it is. Worked the sketch first getting composition and proportions as close as my skills allow. Then did a single layer paint after merging everything down to the background and the painting layer. I might finish this up by fixing the face. It is really bothering me. But other than that I'm happy with the results for the moment. I'll probably hate it tomorrow.

Digital Figure Paintings

I'm getting slightly more comfortable with my wacom but it still feels strange

Tried doing a straight up one layer only painting with this first one.

This one actually started life out as a panel ideation for a comic I'm working on but, ended up being figure studies hah!

Trying to do more studies of industrial designy stuff. So I did a light/plane study of this building.

Of the three this time around I only used one reference image.

Form Study Sculpts

I felt like my skill wasn't growing anymore, so I decided to change it up and build some more confidence with form studies via sculpting. This first few are going to be off the top of my head without reference.

My primary focus was the major forms of the chest and hips. I started with a light-box sphere. This was my first sculpt it was about 20 minutes to get the base form and 30 minutes with details.

major forms for this one took about 5 minutes, and spent about 2 hours on details.

Bus Sketches Feb 17-19

been continuing to work on capturing images from my imagination and accurately portraying them on paper (more or less) Also picked up more computer science grading work so that is keeping me really busy. That and procrastination and largish projects until the last second. But I always seem to get them done on time with a nice amount of polish so that's good right?

Since I was on a bouncing bus, none of these were from reference.
